Episode 63: Trash or Treasure?

Welcome back to Beyond the Berm for Episode 63!

You have heard the old saying about one man’s trash being another man’s treasure, right? We start off by wondering if some of the Disney things we have kept through the years are actually trash or treasure. We are pretty sure they are treasure to us, but how will others look at them? And when our children have to go through our things, whenever that time may come, what will they think about these nice collections of Disney collectibles that we have amassed? What do you think? Trash or treasure?

Next, Matt gives a review of his experience in the Star Wars Half Marathon a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Or actually last weekend at Disneyland. He tells about the different Star Wars characters that were out for photos and a look at the course for the race.

After that, we take a look at the news that Star Wars Episode 8 has been moved back to December 2017, and we give some thoughts about Star Wars: The Force Awakens, too, since most everyone has seen it by now. However, if you haven’t seen it yet, there may be some minor spoilers in there, although we don’t give it all away. Listen at your own risk!

All that and more in Episode 63 of Beyond the Berm!

Episode 62: Predictions for Disney for the New Year

Hello, friends, and welcome to our first episode of 2016!

Happy New Year! Listen in as we give some predictions for Disney movies and parks for 2016.

Since the year is all shiny and new, we decided to talk about the weather. Makes sense, right? Yes, California has had some rain, and Tennessee has had a good bit, too. But really, who cares all that much about the weather, so then we moved on to better things.

Matt thought it would be a good idea to make some predictions. And instead of doing things the easy way and making predictions for 2015, we decided to live on the edge and make some predictions for this year of 2016 that is ahead of us. We went through the different movies to be released, giving our thoughts on how each one might perform. Captain America: Civil War, Zootopia, Star Wars: Rogue One, Moana, Finding Dory, The BFG, Dr. Strange, and some others, too.

Also, we took the opportunity to make some predictions about the Disney parks as well. What lies ahead for Disneyland and Walt Disney World? We made some predictions, which would probably be more accurately called wild guesses.

Maybe we should do a recap at the end of the year, looking back through our predictions to see how we did? Hmm, gotta make a note of that for later on.

Listen in to Beyond the Berm Episode 62 to see what we think lies ahead!

Episode 60: Muppets, Music, Movies, and More!

Beyond the Berm returns with Episode 60! 60 episodes! That’s one episode for every year that Disneyland has been open! Not that we are old enough to have started the same year as Disneyland or anything, of course.

Anyway, to begin with, we talk about the new Muppets television show, which currently airs on Tuesday nights on ABC. It has been getting mixed reactions, but perhaps the strongest reaction so far is the announcement that they will replace the showrunner and go in a different direction for the final episodes of this season. We also talk some about the other Muppet offerings of the past few years and how they haven’t exactly hit the right mark for us. Do you agree or disagree?

The Muppets

Next, Steve brings up some of the live performers of the past and present at the Disney parks and talks about their effect on the parks. Names such as Rod Miller, Off Kilter, the Dapper Dans, Mariachi Cobre, Marimba Mayalandia, Billy Hill and the Hillbillies, the Bibi LaCreme Trio, the Caledonia Bagpipe Band, Voices of Liberty, and more! And yes, we may have listed those in the hopes of bringing more traffic to our site, but some of those names may bring back memories for long time Disneyland and Epcot fans. We discuss some of the positives and negatives of these performers and talk about what they might add to the parks.

WDW Dapper Dans

Up next, Star Wars! If you haven’t heard, there may be a new Star Wars movie coming soon or something. We talk about some of the latest news, although we don’t go into too much detail because we are trying to keep from finding out any spoilers ourselves.

Star Wars The Force Awakens Han Solo

Going along with our Star Wars discussion is some Indiana Jones talk, including our opinions on whether they should recast the role or have some sort of successor to Indy. And we also compare Star Wars to Marvel movies as well, and look at how we aren’t as concerned about not learning plot points of Marvel movies before we see them. Why the difference? We’ll tell you what we think.

All of that, and yes, even more, in the latest episode of Beyond the Berm!

Episode 55: Changes Ahead for the Disney Parks?

Welcome back to another episode of Beyond the Berm! It didn’t even take us 3 months to get out another one as it did the last time!

Maybe you have heard rumblings about changes coming to the Disney Parks, both at the Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. Disneyland has committed to expanding the resort in some form in exchange for a tax break from the city of Anaheim. And Walt Disney World keeps closing things at Disney’s Hollywood Studios without announcing something new on the horizon. What does all of this mean? Listen to us as we comment on some of the speculations, and as we do some speculating ourselves.

In keeping with the Disney Parks theme, Matt tells about his recent visit to Disneyland to see some of the new additions and extravaganzas that were added for the 60th anniversary celebration. Listen in as he talks about parades, fireworks, and crowds!

Also, following up on our conversation about summer movies in Episode 54, we give our reviews of the latest Disney/Marvel movie, Ant-Man. Did it live up to our expectations?

Video: Recording a Podcast

The other day, I shared this video at Burnsland as part of the Burnsland Boring Video series. But because it is Beyond the Berm related, I thought I would share it here as well, just in case you don’t visit Burnsland very often.

Quite a while ago, this Behind the Scenes post revealed how we do things around here. And this video shows one side of that. Just in case you are curious.

But don’t worry – this video compresses a 50 minute podcast into about 30 seconds, thanks to time lapse photography. Because who would want to sit through a 50 minute video of me apparently talking to myself?

Enjoy!

Episode 52: Upcoming Disney Movies

Welcome back to Beyond the Berm! Has it really been a month since our last episode? Yes it has – did you miss us? Well then, you are in store for a treat, because here is Episode 52!

For starters, we discuss many of the Disney movies being released over the next several months, because it looks to be a busy year for the various movie divisions of Disney. We pay particular attention this time to Cinderella, which Matt just saw and gives his review. We also talk a bit about Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant Man, and then we focus some on the now-in-production live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast.

We also discuss some of the upcoming changes at Walt Disney World. Did you know they are adding an extra track to Toy Story Mania and and extra screen to Soarin’? Are these wise uses of the money involved, or would it be better to spend that money on something completely new? Let us know your thoughts!

In addition to all of that, we talk about the new restaurant coming to Adventureland in the Magic Kingdom, some non-Disney vacation options that we have considered, and what we might want from a Disney vacation in the future. It never hurts to dream, right? Oh yeah, and our “interesting” count for this episode probably goes well over 100, if you forgot to keep count.

Episode 49: Matt the Marathon Man

Welcome back to Beyond the Berm for Episode 49!

If you have been following our adventures here (and if you haven’t, why not?), you know that Matt has been preparing for the Walt Disney World Marathon and the Star Wars Half Marathon at Disneyland. And if he completes both, he earns a Coast to Coast medal as well.

This past weekend was the Walt Disney World Marathon. Did Matt complete the marathon? Wouldn’t this episode have been titled differently if he didn’t? And if that doesn’t answer your question, how about this:

Listen in as Matt tells about his experiences along the run. Can running 26.2 miles actually be fun? It certainly sounds like it!

And best of luck to Matt and everyone else participating in the half marathon at Disneyland this weekend!

Episode 48: Best and Worst of 2014

Welcome to the Beyond the Berm Christmas Extravaganza! Also known as Episode 48.

Christmas is almost here, and the year is winding down to a close, in case you haven’t noticed. So for this episode, we discuss some of the Best and Worst of 2014 in several different categories, some of them Disney related, and others of them more general. Listen in to see if you agree! And share some better ideas if you have them!

Matt also gives an update on his two upcoming runs, the Walt Disney World Marathon and the Disneyland Half Marathon, which are just a week apart from each other. Be sure to send him some encouragement, too!

Steve also mentions the first block of Disney programming on TCM, which is this Sunday, December 21. Be sure to set your DVR!

Imagine My Surprise …

As mentioned in Episode 45, I saw one of my photographs of Sleeping Beauty Castle being used on a digital display inside the Grand Californian lobby. This came as a bit of shock to me as I’d never been asked for approval or had it licensed but there it was anyway.

The board with my image …
GrandCalBoard

And my photo on its own …
SBCastle

Although I have this image posted on my Flickr account, I’m fairly confident that whoever posted this at the Grand Californian did not get it from there. This is the same image that a second-grade student had used in their project on Walt Disney at my daughter’s elementary school the year before. Doing a Google image search for “Disneyland” retrieves this image as one of the top returns but the link to the image doesn’t go to Flickr but to some travel website instead.

Short of watermarking my images — or keeping them to myself — trying to retain the right to my copy is probably a bit of losing battle. While I own the copyright to my images, my writings and even the recording of my voice for this podcast, in this day and age of “It’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission,” I’m sure I’ll see my work around from time to time. So rather than be upset that my Sleeping Beauty Castle image was usurped, I’ll feel proud instead that whoever was collecting images for the Grand Californian thought that this was one of the best representative images of Disneyland that they could find. But if the hotel wants to contact me and offer me the Presidential Suite for the weekend anyway, I won’t complain. ;)

Episode 42: It’s a Hullabaloo!

Beyond the Berm is back with Episode 42! And in this episode, we go through several topics fast and furious. And hey, in our new graphic above, we kind of look like the guys from the Fast and Furious movies, don’t we? No? Well then, moving on…

To start off, Steve gives some background about the new header graphic, including a bit about the tools that he used to make it happen and how he might have done things differently.

Next up, Matt brings up two hand-drawn animation projects. The first is a short film called Duet, which was created by renowned former Disney animator Glen Keane. The second is Hullabaloo, an effort to make a 2D hand-drawn short in the hopes of expanding it to a full-length feature. It is nice to see that some people out there still like hand-drawn animation when so many of the big studios have gone to computer animation.

Steve then tells about the new series of Figment comic books from Marvel comics. These comic books tell something of a back story about Dreamfinder and Figment, and they have been pretty popular, selling out the first printing of the first issue completely. Have you read them? What do you think?

Matt then gives a brief recap of his family’s recent participation in the runDisney event at Disneyland. They had participants in the kids’ race, the 10K, and the half marathon. Come hear about their experiences.

And yes, even though it isn’t necessarily the primary focus of this episode, “Hullabaloo” was chosen as the title here just because it is fun to say. Be sure to join the Hullabaloo with us!
